We have added an additional date for our 5 year longitudinal study in the Masters Athlete Screening Project.  It is scheduled for January 9th, 2016 at City Sports and Physio, downtown Vancouver (address below) from 9am to 4:30pm.

Brief Information about the study (additional information in the consent form), please read carefully and ask any questions:

Eligibility Criteria: Athletes (male and female) over 35 years old and participate in competitive sports (participate in organized team or individual sport that requires training and regular competition against others and places a high premium on athletic performance) or are involved in informal recreational sports at a moderate to vigorous intensity level (an intensity that causes your heart to beat rapidly and to sweat) at least 3 times per week .

Why: When a seemingly healthy athlete collapses while participating in physical activity or sport, it is a tragic event.  Through this research Sports Cardiology BC aims to evaluate the cardiovascular risk and the best screening method for detecting cardiovascular disease in British Columbia masters athletes in order to prevent adverse cardiac events and sudden cardiac death in sport.  We will also determine the prevalence of atrial fibrillation in the masters athlete and its association with the intensity of sport and volume of lifetime physical activity.

INITIAL SCREENING (sign up using the “Register Online” link below):

The initial screen includes, a resting 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG), a cardiovascular physical examination (physician listens to your heart sounds and reviews cardiovascular history), and height, weight, waist circumference, and blood pressure measurements. Please allot 30 minutes for the screening.  There is no exercise test during your initial screening.

REQUIRED:

Results of a blood lipid profile (including fasting blood glucose) performed in the previous 6 months.

If you do not have a current test results, please bring your care card and a requisition for a lipid profile will be provided at your initial screening.

POSITIVE SCREEN:

If the initial screen is positive, you will be contacted by the research team to undergo an exercise stress test at a later date. This will be conducted at a Sports CardiologyBC affiliated facility near you.  This will take approximately 45 minutes.

If the exercise stress test is positive or inconclusive you will be contacted for additional diagnostic testing.  These tests can take an additional hour.

5 YEAR FOLLOW UP:

Each subsequent year for 5 years you will be asked to complete a follow up questionnaire, redo your blood lipid profile, and have the resting ECG re-administered. This will take approximately 30 minutes of your time.

The participants will receive a cardiovascular risk profile of their results and recommendations for their positive risk factors after all tests are complete.
